How we build it
We clear and strip the route, cut out soft spots, and shape the subgrade before any rock goes down. Then we lay and compact base material in lifts and finish with a crown so water sheds to the sides instead of sitting in the middle. Where water crosses the driveway, we plan for it with a culvert or a ditch rather than hoping it finds its own way.

Why it matters on clay
Much of Johnson County sits on clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Rock spread straight on top of that soil gets pushed into the mud within a season or two. A properly prepared base and good drainage are what make the difference between a driveway that lasts and one you redo every few years.
